A Laboratory Study of Behavioral Contagion

Author: Grosser, D.

Description: The present study is an elaboration of a cue picked up in the earlier study; in some cases prestige did not seem an important factor in initiating contagion. The mere occurrence of an act “triggered” it off in others. Tests to ascertain the factors involved took place in a laboratory; children paired with “planted” collaboraters were provided with various play and problem activities. The results indicated that there were environmental factors which were important; availability of other activity. In addition various personal factors were significantly related to contagious behavior; judgments of disapproval from others, diminishment of fear, increasing satisfaction.
