Description: Cothill, Berkshire, which is 5 miles south-west of Oxford and marked on the
Ordnance Survey maps as ‘Parcel 6’ (Nat. Grid Ref. 41/463998). The area in
question is described more fully in the next section; it was chosen for study
because it appeared to have a rather uniform vegetation, a shallow inhabitable soil and therefore might be expected to have a relatively simple soil fauna and also because some work had been done on the botany of the larger plants and the peat by Prof. A. R. Clapham of Sheffield University and on the soil fungi by Mr J. Harper of Oxford University Botany Department. Factors which were not anticipated when the study was commenced were that
